Stage two of the network will run from Birmingham and then, via two seperate forks, along to Toton near Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester including the airport.

With speeds of up to 250mph, it is said that a journey between Birmingham and Manchester would be halved down to 41 mins and a London- Manchester journey would take just 2 hours 8 min (specific I know!). This could make it much easier to go to meetings about invoice finance options with the bank manager or client meetings in the big city!

Chancellor George Osborne has said that the new network will be an “engine for growth” as it will create thousands of jobs, help to better connect the country and make travelling for meetings, easier and more practical. However there has undoubedly been criticism.

There are around 70 groups against the plans who have a number of issues with the plans. Firstly the line open won’t be open till around 2032-33! Secondly it will be a highly expensive, costing around £32bn.

Also there is criticism that the countryside will suffer as the rail line is constructed throughout Northern England.

What is your opinion on the proposed plans? Do you think it will be good for business or do you think it will harm your business more than help it? Let me know your thoughts…
